U.S. Department of Commerce awards $79 million grant to Coherent

The U.S. Department of Commerce announced that it has provided Coherent with $79 million in direct grant funding under the Chips and Science Act. The funds will support the expansion of Coherent's existing manufacturing plant in Easton, Pennsylvania to increase the production capacity of 6-inch and 8-inch SiC substrates. In addition, the funds will also support Coherent to expand the plant's SiC epitaxial wafer manufacturing capabilities, production line back-end processing, electronic performance and reliability testing capabilities. Once the expansion is completed, Coherent's SiC substrate production capacity will increase by more than 750,000 wafers per year and more than double the annual output of epitaxial wafers.
